Philosophy of Hunter Library Public Services

The Hunter Library Public Services staff strives to provide quality library and information services to in-Library and remote patrons. Through personalized service and instruction, patrons learn how to locate, use, evaluate, and borrow Library resources. Referrals are made when Hunter Library resources have been consulted and the patron needs additional information.

Access Policy

While Hunter Library’s primary mission is to support the teaching, research, and public service programs of Western Carolina University, the Library is open to any individual age fourteen (14) and over. In accordance with Western Carolina University policy, people under the age of fourteen (14) must be accompanied by an adult while on campus, which includes Hunter Library. North Carolina residents not affiliated with WCU may purchase a card for $10 per year to check out certain Library materials.

Guidelines for Behavior in Hunter Library

Hunter Library is committed to maintaining an environment conducive to research and study, and to respect the rights and needs of others. It is a place for individual study or group study related to shared projects. Groups too large for an area are not allowed. Groups of more than eight people must request permission for a study session from the Circulation Supervisor. Hunter Library has zero tolerance for disruptive and/or destructive behavior. To this end, all Library patrons are expected to conduct themselves accordingly. WCU students in Hunter Library shall follow the University’s Code of Student Conduct. When inappropriate behavior is brought to the Library's attention and the behavior continues, this may result in staff requesting the offender(s) to leave the Library premises immediately. Library staff will contact the Campus Police if the disruptive behavior does not stop, or if a patron refuses to leave when requested to do so. Student Affairs may also be contacted for disciplinary action.

Student Organization Group Study

To best accommodate study hall activities by official campus student organizations, the following policy applies:

  • The appropriate student leaders/coordinator of the organization will contact Hunter Library’s Circulation Supervisor and provide a schedule of the date and times of each study hall session. This must be received at least a day in advance of the scheduled session. Please use the “Student Organization or Group Library Use Form.”
  • All groups must be accompanied by a proctor (junior or senior) who will identify themselves at the Circulation Desk before the study hall session begins.
  • Large groups will disperse into smaller groups, preferably four or fewer students to a group.
  • As the Library has a limited amount of laptop computers, and these are in high demand, we ask that only one laptop be checked-out per small group.
  • The Circulation staff will report any misbehavior to the proctor on duty who will take corrective action.
  • If problems persist, and can not be resolved by the proctor, disruptive behavior will be reported to Student Affairs, and procedures outlined in the Guidelines for Behavior in Hunter Library will be followed.
